The club was founded by the head coach Kiki Bosch who wanted his son to learn and to play lacrosse, the game he loved. At the time there were a few teams in the county, but all too far to commute for practice with any regularity. There was only one solution, to start our own team. The research began and to make a long story short with the help and insights from our friend Rich Barba of the Weston Warriors our fledging Broward Pirates team was born. Boys lacrosse was now represented on the east side of Broward County.
It was decided that the best way to advertise the new team was to have Kiki's son and his friends hand flyers to their friends.
A simple home made bi-fold flyer said it all.
“With the help of kids and their parents most of whom did not even know the game, our ranks filled and we were able to put together not only the originally planned 5th /6th grade junior team, but also a 7th/8th grade senior team. The fun task of teaching all these boys a game that they had never even seen before had begun. Again with more help from Rich we joined the South Florida Youth Lacrosse League, and The Broward Pirates Lacrosse Club played its first season in 2006.
To say our first season was not pretty is an understatement. Most games we lost in a big way to the already well established teams in the area. The boys showed they had heart though, and even though the first season only produced one win for the junior team, they had caught the bug. Lacrosse was awesomely fun, and they all came back for the 2007 season.
The Broward Pirates are currently in their fourth season. The last of the original Broward Pirates are graduating at the end of this season. These boys have come a long way. From winning only one game in their first season to having winning seasons in 2007 and 2008, and only having lost one game in 2009 with only two games left to go.
Where do we go from here? We continue our mission of teaching this awesome game to boys and maybe eventually girls that are motivated and committed to learn it while having a heck of a lot of fun in the process. We strive not only to create good players but also good citizens. We teach and lead by example, and have very high expectations of our Pirates. We are always open to kids looking for challenge and fun. Do yours have what it takes to be part of our Pirate family? COME PLAY WITH STICKS!
